Google continues it’s dominance over Microsoft.

Google Sites, a new offering from Google Apps, makes creating a team site as easy as editing a document. Use Google Sites to centralize all types of information — from videos to presentations — and share your site with just a few people, your entire organization, or the world.

Google acquired JotSpot a wiki company along time ago and we almost forgot about it.  Now Google finally shows why it bought the company many moons ago.

Watch for tomorrow’s Freaky Friday Link Love and I will show you other tools that do the same thing as Google Sites.  They are not the first to offer an online collaboration but will they gain momentum or just be the headline of the day?  We will have to watch and see.  In the meantime watch this video to see what Google Sites has to offer.

5 Must Know For New Email Users

Posted by Admiral70 | Computers | January 2008

This post is dedicated to my Father-in-law Loren.  Recently he took on a new job that requires him to use a computer with it email.  I sent him an email and he was having a hard time replying back.  I told him how to just hit reply and type me a message in the blank area and then hit send.  Here are 5 must know’s for newbie’s.

1. How to compose an email: All programs have a few things in common.

  • To:  This is where you put the email addresses you want to send to.  Email address have an @ sign in it for example hiphop@pattywack.com.
  •  Subject:  A subject line is where you put a brief explanation of what is to follow.  One of my favorite post on this subject is Do Your Emails Suck- How to Write Emails That Get Results.
  • Body: This is the larger blank area you compose your email or information you want to say to the person your sending the email to.

gmail

2. How to send an attachment: Their are times when you need to send a file to someone.  Most email programs have a way to attach a file.  A paper clip is normally associated to attaching a file or it will say attach a file.  Once you click on Attach a file you will be asked to browse to the file you want to attach.

3. How to reply to an email: The easiest way to reply to an email is to click on reply this will populate the To field with the persons address that originally sent you the email.  You can always add more addresses in the To field if you choose.

image

4. What links are and what they look like in emails:  Links or hyperlinks are electronic pointers that help a computer jump from one website to another by simply clicking a link.  These are generally blue and underlined.  Sometimes they are red and underlined.  Blue means you have not visited the link and reds mean you have clicked on it before.

5. What to do with attachments: Just as you can send an attachment/file you can receive them.  These are files with information the person sending you the email would like to share with you.  They can be Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or pictures like JPEG.  There are endless number of file attachment possibilities, click here for a great resource of file extensions.

The same paper clip used in sending attachments can show what attachments are in an email.  You can click on the attachment name and either open it or download it to your computer.  You can then open it and view what the person has sent you.  Word of caution, if you do not know the person  sending you the email and attachment DO NOT open it.  Attachments can carry viruses that may be harmful to your computer.

How to interact with a blog is a great resource for those that maybe new to blogging.

Telnet taking over the world one command at a time

Posted by Admiral70 | Computers | January 2008

telnet It amazes me how much Telnet is still used these days.  I personally have not used it a lot.  The corporation I work for uses it a lot to remote into routers and switches.

Wikipedia says

TELNET (TELecommunication NETwork) is a network protocol used on the Internet or local area network (LAN) connections. It was developed in 1969 beginning with RFC 15 and standardized as IETF STD 8, one of the first Internet standards.

If your an IT person and have not had the pleasures of using Telnet.  I recommend that you get some training so that you can be competitive in the industry.  With the new year upon us I think that should be a goal of mine.  Get back into telnet commands to have a competitive edge in this over crowded industry called information technology.

What about you, do you have a need for Telnet

Happy New Year and Happy 25th Birthday TCP/IP

Posted by Admiral70 | Internet | January 2008

HAPPY NEW YEAR

May 2008 be your break out year.

Instead of talking about new years resolutions and what we are or are not going to do in 2008.  I thought I would take a minute and wish something a very Happy Birthday.

January 1, 1983 is the official birthday of TCP/IP according to Google’s TCP/IP Logo.

TCP

is a “protocol” built on top of IP (every TCP/IP packet has an IP portion). TCP’s entire job is ensuring that the connection occurs in an organized matter. To understand TCP’s purpose, let’s reconsider the package analogy. Say you have to send a script over the “normal” snail mail, and for whatever reason you have to send it in 2 separate packages. This occurs in TCP/IP all the time. So, it’s up to the receiver to arrange the individual packages into one whole package. TCP/IP connections have been handled with TCP/IP handshakes since January 1, 1983.

TCP - is responsible for verifying the correct delivery of data from client to server.
IP - is responsible for moving packet of data from node to node.

Layers on top of TCP/IP are:

HTTP: Hyper Text Transfer Protocol (for requesting webpages)
FTP: File Transfer Protocol (for uploading files to websites)
SMTP and POP3: For sending (SMTP) and receiving (POP3) e-mail
IRC: For chatting online

HAPPY 25th BIRTHDAY TCP/IP!!

Google Giving Away 10 Million Dollars in Free Money

Posted by Admiral70 | Mobile Devices, Technology | December 2007

Looking through my Entrecard dashboard and found this video on JoeTech.com.  It’s about the highly anticpated Gphone, oh wait, I mean Google mobile platform called Android.

Steve Horowitz, Engineer Director for Google said

there is actually NO GPhone

He does go on to say

they hope the (Android) platform will enable people to create thousands of GPhones.

So which is it, no gphones or gphones?

These are the times I wish I was a developer.  To maybe collect on some of that $10 million Android challenge
