Posted by Admiral70 | Internet | December 2007

For all you Firefox users out there.

I have stuck with IE and migrated to the latest version when it come’s out.  I have FireFox installed but do not use it that much.  I did have Netscape installed only for testing website’s that I have built.  I guess I get set in my ways and stick to it good or bad.

How about you, what browser do you use the most?

What is an RSS Feed?

Posted by Admiral70 | Blogging, Internet | December 2007

What is RSS?
RSS (or Really Simple Syndication) feeds are free content feeds from Web sites, including Fam5, that contain article headlines, summaries and links back to full-text articles on the web.

What tools do I need to use RSS?
To start using RSS, you need a special news reader or aggregator that displays RSS content feeds from Web sites you select. There are many different news readers available, many of which are free of charge. Most are available as desktop software that you download and install on your computer. Several Web-based news readers are available as well, here is a List of news readers

I currently use Google Readerfor my RSS subscriptions.  You might be interested in viewing the items that I’ve shared through Google Reader.

Once you have set up your news reader, you simply subscribe to the RSS content feeds you want.

What are the benefits of using RSS?
RSS is an easy way for you to be alerted when content that interests you appears on your favorite Web sites. Instead of visiting a particular Web site to browse for new articles and features, RSS automatically tells you when something new is posted online.

Click on the section title link to obtain the RSS URL, which you will see in the “Address” field of of your browser. Simply copy this URL and follow the instructions for your particular news reader to subscribe.

How can I sign up to RSS feeds from Fam5?
To sign up for RSS feeds from Fam5, look for the Subscribe link normally looks like  it can be orange, red, or one of many other colors.

Emoticons turn 25

Posted by Admiral70 | Internet | September 2007

Today marks the 25th anniversary of the electronic ’smiley face’ : - ).  September 19, 1982 at 11:44 am Carnegie Mellon University Professor Scott Fahlman put three characters together to make the now famous :-).   During a discussion Mr. Fahlman was having on a bulletin board (do you remember bulletin boards?) he was commenting about the limits of online humor and how to denote comments meant to be taken lightly.  He then went on to say “I propose the following character sequence for joke makers, : - )’, wrote Mr. Fahlman.  Click here to read the Unversity’s official press release about this monumental event.

Computer science and linguistics professors contacted by The Associated Press said they were unaware of who first used the symbol.

“I’ve never seen any hard evidence that the : - ) sequence was in use before my original post, and I’ve never run into anyone who actually claims to have invented it before I did,” Fahlman wrote on the university’s Web page dedicated to the smiley face.

“But it’s always possible that someone else had the same idea _ it’s a simple and obvious idea, after all.”

Digital ‘smiley face’ turns 25: Web’s ubiquitous ‘colon-hyphen-parenthesis’ celebrates a milestone.

This is where the emotional icons (a.k.a. emoticons) originated.  In case you are not aware the Internet began as bulletin boards from Universities to Universities and then for those that had computers with modems.  I remember dialing into David Harter a friend/mentor’s bulletin board in the late 80’s early 90’s from Misawa Japan when I was in the Navy.  I struggle with the name of the BBS but I am sure he will make a comment and if he would remind me and the readers the name of the BBS that would be great.

Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday dear :-)
Happy Birthday to you,
and many more…….

Thank you Professor Scott Fahlman.

PageFlakes, RSS feeds, and Podcasting

Posted by Admiral70 | Internet | May 2007

I have ran into some interesting things from the Internet I wanted to share with you guys.First is a site called pageflakes

What is pageflakes?
Pageflakes is your personalized start page on the Internet. Your address book, local weather information, to-do-list, news, blogs and much more – all on one page that you can access from anywhere. I find it a nice alternative to your homepage. At first it was pretty cool but the more I enter my pageflake I find it not as cool as I hoped for. I have not had time to play with it a lot to see if it would allow me to add better content to my page. Worth checking out and seeing what you think. I feel it has potential.

The other thing I wanted to share with you is called Podcastready. It is a site that you can download a little player/downloader for listening to podcast. You add sites either through the desktop player or on the website. Then using the desktop player you can download various podcast and listen to them at your leisure. I have a couple of news cast and a few technology based podcast. I enjoy listening to the opinions and reviews of others. If you enjoy listening to talk radio or watch the news you will find this site up your alley.

Lastly I have been using the RSS feeds a lot lately. I use IE 7 for my browser and one of the new functions is the browsers ability to notice a site has an RSS feed. The RSS feed icon will light up allowing you to add it to your RSS favorites. Then you can visit your favorites and when the link is bold in color you will know to click on it and it will take you to the site so that you can read what they have added to there site for the day.

I hope you find these reviews interesting and you will check them out.

Webcam Review

Posted by Admiral70 | Computers, Internet, Reviews | February 2007

Microsoft LifeCam VX-3000 ( 68A-00001 )I have recently purchased two of these webcams. I put one at home and one at my desk at work. I wanted to start playing with the video conferencing aspect of technology. I also wanted to use it with Skype. So far the webcam is very nice it allows my 2 year old to see me in the morning when she wakes up and I am at work. There is a lag in video but nothing to bad. The audio is great I have no complaints with the built in microphone. It has face tracking and it does work if you turn it on but I find that when you do that it zooms in to your face and you don’t see your surroundings. In the case of talking to my wife and baby, that is not good, cause it focuses on one face and you miss the other. We use the webcam a lot with Windows Live Messenger. Works as advertised can’t complain.I have not found a way to have the webcam take a picture at a designated time and post it to a website. This is one feature that I would like to use it for that does not appear to be an option. I really like it’s compact size and look forward to taking it with me when I go out of town. Should keep the family in touch and save on phone bills. My next experiment will be taking pics with it and adding them to my blog.

I give the Microsoft Lifecam vx-3000 a Thumbs up or 4 stars out of 5.  Here are the specifics from Microsoft.

High Definition Photos
High Definition photos (1.3 megapixels interpolated)* show you in the best light.

Built-in Microphone
The built-in microphone automatically picks up your voice with remarkable clarity.

Windows Live™ Call Button
Just press this button and select an Online Contact to start a video call.

Automatic Face-Tracking Software**
Move around without disappearing from the screen—advanced software keeps your face front and center.

Universal Attachment Base
It’s a snap to attach the LifeCam to any monitor.

Pan, Tilt and Zoom
The pan and tilt functionality make it a snap to capture the big picture, however you want to see it.

Flexible Six-Foot Cable
The long, flexible cable gives you more room to move.

Video Effects
Surprise your friends with cool video effects, accessible right from the Windows Live Messenger Window.

Up To 30 Frames Per Second
LifeCams capture life at 30 frames per second, which means the video images you see are smooth and seamless.
I hope you find this review helpful and start using a webcam yourself.

Million Dollar Homepage

Posted by Admiral70 | Internet | January 2006

I was recently blown away by a website called Million Dollar Homepage. This site sold pixels for advertising. This kid in England was laying there wondering how he was going to pay for College. Some how he thought up selling 1 million pixels in advertising. So basically $1 per pixel in 10×10 chunks. This is 100 pixels for $100. You have to see the site to understand what is going on with this. He has a blog that discuss his 5 months it took to sale 1 million pixels. Just crazy to think about how simple yet creative this ideas was.
