Why you will want the Nexus One over the iPad

Published by Jeff under Computers, Mobile Devices, Technology

All the hype today is over Apple’s announcement of the new iPad multi-touch screen laptop/notebook/netbook/tablet computer.  Seems like an oversized iPhone or iPod to me at first glance.

You will want to buy the Google Nexus One because you are all in on Google services.  You are a user of Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, Google Voice, Google Reader and many other wonderful Google services.

With the iPad starting at $499 for a 16 GB and the Nexus one at potentially $179 for 16 GB.  Not to mention the size of the two devices.  One you can put in your shirt pocket while the other will need to be put into a binder essentially.  They both have Wi-Fi while the Nexus One has 3G for a price less than the iPad will be with 3G capability.  Where is the microSD slot on the iPad?  Don’t tell me once again Apple limits expansion of memory.

Either way it goes the technology is progressing rather nicely right now.  Thinner, light weight and more compact is pleasing to me.  If your an Apple/Mac/iPhone user you will kill for the new iPad.  If your like me and keep an open mind then you will want the new Nexus One.

5 Must Know For New Email Users

Published by Jeff under Computers

This post is dedicated to my Father-in-law Loren.  Recently he took on a new job that requires him to use a computer with it email.  I sent him an email and he was having a hard time replying back.  I told him how to just hit reply and type me a message in the blank area and then hit send.  Here are 5 must know’s for newbie’s.

1. How to compose an email: All programs have a few things in common.

  • To:  This is where you put the email addresses you want to send to.  Email address have an @ sign in it for example hiphop@pattywack.com.
  •  Subject:  A subject line is where you put a brief explanation of what is to follow.  One of my favorite post on this subject is Do Your Emails Suck- How to Write Emails That Get Results.
  • Body: This is the larger blank area you compose your email or information you want to say to the person your sending the email to.

gmail

2. How to send an attachment: Their are times when you need to send a file to someone.  Most email programs have a way to attach a file.  A paper clip is normally associated to attaching a file or it will say attach a file.  Once you click on Attach a file you will be asked to browse to the file you want to attach.

3. How to reply to an email: The easiest way to reply to an email is to click on reply this will populate the To field with the persons address that originally sent you the email.  You can always add more addresses in the To field if you choose.

4. What links are and what they look like in emails:  Links or hyperlinks are electronic pointers that help a computer jump from one website to another by simply clicking a link.  These are generally blue and underlined.  Sometimes they are red and underlined.  Blue means you have not visited the link and reds mean you have clicked on it before.

5. What to do with attachments: Just as you can send an attachment/file you can receive them.  These are files with information the person sending you the email would like to share with you.  They can be Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, or pictures like JPEG.  There are endless number of file attachment possibilities, click here for a great resource of file extensions.

The same paper clip used in sending attachments can show what attachments are in an email.  You can click on the attachment name and either open it or download it to your computer.  You can then open it and view what the person has sent you.  Word of caution, if you do not know the person  sending you the email and attachment DO NOT open it.  Attachments can carry viruses that may be harmful to your computer.

Telnet taking over the world one command at a time

Published by Jeff under Computers

telnet It amazes me how much Telnet is still used these days.  I personally have not used it a lot.  The corporation I work for uses it a lot to remote into routers and switches.

Wikipedia says

TELNET (TELecommunication NETwork) is a network protocol used on the Internet or local area network (LAN) connections. It was developed in 1969 beginning with RFC 15 and standardized as IETF STD 8, one of the first Internet standards.

If your an IT person and have not had the pleasures of using Telnet.  I recommend that you get some training so that you can be competitive in the industry.  With the new year upon us I think that should be a goal of mine.  Get back into telnet commands to have a competitive edge in this over crowded industry called information technology.

What about you, do you have a need for Telnet
